Laboratory / Appointment guide

Blood tests

A blood sample can help a clinician investigate symptoms or monitor a condition. The tests requested determine how you need to prepare.

Check the test request

Take the request from your clinician and confirm the exact test names with the laboratory. Some blood tests require fasting; others do not. Follow the instructions for your tests and ask before changing any medicine.

At the appointment

A healthcare professional usually takes a small sample from a vein in your arm. Tell them if needles make you anxious or you have felt faint during a previous blood test.

Getting the report

Ask when the report will be ready and how you will receive it. Arrange for the clinician who requested the test to explain the results in the context of your symptoms and medical history.

Preparation instructions depend on the tests ordered. Do not fast or stop medicines just because you are having a blood test.
