Imaging / Appointment guide

Ultrasound scan

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images inside the body. The area being examined determines the preparation and how the scan is performed.

Confirm which scan is booked

Read the scan request to the clinic when booking. Some scans require a full bladder or other preparation. Ask the clinic for instructions specific to your scan.

During the scan

For an external scan, gel is applied to the skin and a handheld probe moves over the area. Some scans use an internal probe; staff should explain the examination beforehand. You can ask for a chaperone.

After the appointment

Ask whether you will receive a report at the visit or later, and whether it will also be sent to the referring clinician. That clinician can explain what the findings mean for your care.

Tell the person performing the scan if you are uncomfortable. You can ask for an explanation or ask them to stop.
